The Benefits of Organic
*
*
The benefits are endless and include:

· GMO free

No GMOs, chemical pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. There is usually a wide variety of grasses and herbs in the sward that are beneficial to health. Field rotations are used to keep fields free of pests and diseases.
Feeding centres around sound nutrition as opposed to maximising growth rates.

· Higher animal welfare

Extremely high standards of animal welfare are maintained from birth to slaughter.
The young stay with their mothers as long as possible. For example, pigs are not weaned until they are two months old.

Antibiotics are used in medical emergency only, not added to feed as a growth promoter or disease preventer. Where needed, use is made of homeopathic remedies with great success.

There is no need to dock pigs’ tails, clip their teeth or ring their noses. Neither is it necessary to clip chickens’ beaks. We do castrate male beef animals on safety grounds, and we also castrate male sheep because if left entire their meat can get a bit tough and tainted as they mature.
Livestock graze organically maintained pastures freely in small herds; pigs and poultry have moveable houses (arcs) to provide shelter and security.

· Beneficial to economy of countryside

Organic farming uses more people with more skills than mainstream intensive agriculture.

· Beneficial to the environment

Through livestock and crop rotation, soil fertility is maintained and increased. Fields at Eastbrook Farm provide a haven for a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as rare birds such as skylarks and yellowhammers.
